New Mexico Gas Company works with the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) to provide assistance to income-qualified customers to help improve the energy efficiency of their homes and lower their utility bills.

New Mexico Gas Company sponsors the New Mexico Energy$mart program, which offers our income-qualifying customers free home weatherization and installs energy-saving measures to help improve the health and safety of their homes.

This assistance can be used for a range of repairs and improvements, including:
  • repair or replacement of broken glass
  • weather-stripping
  • sealing and caulking cracks
  • installation of door sweeps
  • exterior doors
  • fireplace dampers
  • water heater insulation blankets
  • thermostat controls
  • repairs, including lumber, to frame or repair windows and doors
  • roofing materials to patch or repair leaks
  • protective materials (paint) or repair materials
  • ceiling, wall and floor insulation
  • stove pipe repair/replacement
  • smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • furnace repair/replacement
Appliance Repairs
While reconnecting natural gas service after the recent outages, technicians were unable to relight appliances that were unsafe and needed repairs to make them safe. Funding has been allocated to the NM Mortgage Finance Authority to help income-qualifying customers with these needed repairs on their natural gas-burning appliances, as well as with weatherization services. For customers affected by the recent outages who are interested in this assistance, information on the MFA program, along with application forms, can be found here.

3. Any home can be eligible, whether owned or rented, single family or multi-family. Certain guidelines must be followed for rental properties.

4. Preference is given to persons over 60 years of age, persons with disabilities, and in some cases, families with children. If someone in your household receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), you are automatically eligible.

5. The amount of assistance can not exceed $6,500 per household.

Due to the scarcity of resources, priority is given to the lowest income households. Because funding is limited, you may be placed on a waiting list when you apply. Weatherization work is performed by four sub-grantees located throughout the state.
