Native American Scholarship Program

The road to completing post-secondary education can be a long one. Whether pursuing a certification through a trade school or completing law school, one thing remains certain – the steps along the way take time, dedication, and sacrifices.

New Mexico Gas Company’s Native American Scholarship Program (NASP) supports Native American students in New Mexico pursuing their passions and efforts towards completing post-secondary education programs by demonstrating a desire to engage in their future through education. The program assists students in pursuit of an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. Students pursuing certification from a trade school or specialized technical training assistance are also eligible for the program, setting this program apart from other traditional scholarship programs.

Eligibility

The traditional criteria for other scholarship programs include a requirement for a minimum GPA, letters of recommendation, or declaration of a specific major. The Native American Scholarship Program is different by design and as unique as the students it serves. There is no minimum GPA to apply or letters of recommendation to gather. Students meeting the following criteria are eligible to apply:

  • Applicant must be a New Mexico resident at the time of application.
  • Enrolled member of a New Mexico Pueblo, Tribe, or Nation.
  • High School Senior – expected to graduate or have obtained a GED.
  • Native American students currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution (college, university, trade school, or pursuing technical training)
  • Full and part-time students are eligible.
  • Field of Study is the student’s choice.

Since 2011, the Native American Scholarship Program has awarded $524,000 to 265 Native American students representing 20 of New Mexico’s 23 Pueblos, Tribes, and Nations.

Twenty initial or renewal scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded in 2025. Scholarship applications for the 2025 – 2026 academic year will open April 2025.
